Weekly Initial Unemployment Claims Decrease 5,000 to 207,000

In the week ending April 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 207,000, a decrease of 5,000
from the previous week's unrevised level of 212,000. The 4-week moving average was 213,250, a decrease of 1,250 from
the previous week's unrevised average of 214,500.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent for the week ending April 13, unchanged
from the previous week's unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the
week ending April 13 was 1,781,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's
level was revised down by 16,000 from 1,812,000 to 1,796,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,794,000, a decrease
of 7,250 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised down by 4,000 from
1,805,250 to 1,801,250.
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 201,619 in the week ending April
20, a decrease of 7,363 (or -3.5 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 2,549
(or -1.2 percent) from the previous week. There were 203,233 initial claims in the comparable week in 2023.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent during the week ending April 13, unchanged from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,820,655, a decrease
of 27,685 (or -1.5 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 12,574 (or -0.7
percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.2 percent and the volume was 1,749,975.

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 201,619 in the week ending April
20, a decrease of 7,363 (or -3.5 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 2,549
(or -1.2 percent) from the previous week. There were 203,233 initial claims in the comparable week in 2023.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2 percent during the week ending April 13, unchanged from
the prior week. The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled 1,820,655, a decrease
of 27,685 (or -1.5 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 12,574 (or -0.7
percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.2 percent and the volume was 1,749,975.
The total number of continued weeks claimed for benefits in all programs for the week ending April 6 was 1,873,546, a
decrease of 79,491 from the previous week. There were 1,815,498 weekly claims filed for benefits in all programs in the
comparable week in 2023.
No state was triggered "on" the Extended Benefits program during the week ending April 6.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 361 in the week ending April 13, an
increase of 34 from the prior week. There were 378 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 57
from the preceding week.
There were 5,273 continued weeks claimed filed by former Federal civilian employees the week ending April 6, a
decrease of 273 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 4,345, a decrease of 330
from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 6 were in New Jersey (2.7), California (2.3), Rhode
Island (2.1), Massachusetts (2.0), Minnesota (2.0), Illinois (1.9), New York (1.9), Pennsylvania (1.7), Washington
(1.7), Alaska (1.6), Nevada (1.6), and Puerto Rico (1.6).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending April 13 were in California (+2,405), Connecticut (+1,613),
Georgia (+1,419), Oregon (+1,397), and New York (+506), while the largest decreases were in New Jersey (-4,370),
Wisconsin (-1,843), Pennsylvania (-1,604), Illinois (-1,573), and Minnesota (-1,274)
