Wholesale Inventories up 0.6% in August 2021

August 2021 sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences but not for price changes, were $595.5 billion, down 1.1 percent (±0.5 percent) from the revised July level, but were up 20.6 percent (±1.8 percent) from the revised August 2020 level. The June 2021 to July 2021 percent change was revised from the preliminary estimate of up 2.0 percent (±0.4 percent) to up 2.1 percent (±0.4 percent).
Total inventories of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences, but not for price changes, were $731.1 billion at the end of August, up 1.2 percent (±0.2 percent) from the revised July level. Total inventories were up 12.3 percent (±1.2 percent) from the revised August 2020 level. The July 2021 to August 2021 percent change was unrevised from the advance estimate of up 1.2 percent (±0.2 percent).
The August Inventories/Sales Ratio for merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, based on seasonally adjusted data, was 1.23. The August 2020 ratio was 1.32.
