Wholesale Inventories down 0.3% in January 2024

January 2024 sales of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences but not for price changes, were $657.2 billion, down 1.7 percent (±0.4 percent) from the revised December level and were down 1.5 percent (±0.9 percent) from the revised January 2023 level. The November 2023 to December 2023 percent change was revised from the preliminary estimate of up 0.7 percent (±0.5 percent) to up 0.3 percent (±0.5 percent)*.
Total inventories of merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, after adjustment for seasonal variations and trading day differences, but not for price changes, were $895.1 billion at the end of January, down 0.3 percent (±0.2 percent) from the revised December level. Total inventories were down 2.5 percent (±1.1 percent) from the revised January 2023 level. The December 2023 to January 2024 percent change was revised from the advance estimate of down 0.1 percent (±0.2 percent)* to down 0.3 percent (±0.2 percent).
The January Inventories/Sales Ratio for merchant wholesalers, except manufacturers’ sales branches and offices, based on seasonally adjusted data, was 1.36. The January 2023 ratio was 1.38.
